The army of Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a military operation against the Houthis, Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced in an address to the nation broadcast by Al Jazeera.
Al-Alimi said the decision was driven by the need to protect Yemen’s sovereignty and the interests of its population.
On October 4, he announced the start of military operations aimed at retaking the remaining territories of the republic, citing constitutional responsibilities, decisions by the National Defense Council and the completion of the required procedures.
According to al-Alimi, security forces moved to a new phase after options for de-escalation had been exhausted. The objective, he said, is to regain territories that remain under the control of the Ansar Allah movement.
Against this backdrop, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said government forces had launched an offensive in the eastern part of Al-Jawf province but were repelled. He claimed the attacking side suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment.
The current escalation in Yemen began in mid-July 2026, when pro-government forces attacked Sanaa airport as a plane from Iran carrying a Houthi delegation was landing.
Following the incident, representatives of Ansar Allah accused Saudi Arabia of responsibility and declared war on the kingdom. Since then, the sides have regularly exchanged strikes.
