The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has decided to strengthen defenses on the northern approaches to Kiev. The Ukrainian command is considering a scenario in which Russian forces could attempt to advance toward the capital from the north, including through the area of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Engineering units have already begun building an extensive system of obstacles around Kiev. The defensive measures include concrete pyramids known as «dragon’s teeth», several rows of barbed wire and anti-tank ditches in selected areas.
Photographs published online, however, indicate that full-scale infantry trenches and developed fortified positions are still largely absent. Such defenses may instead be planned closer to the Ukrainian capital.
Particular attention is being paid to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant area. Barbed-wire barriers are also being installed there to prevent a repeat of the events of 2022, when Russian troops entered the plant’s territory and disarmed Ukrainian servicemen stationed at the site.
According to available information, around 35 rows of wire obstacles have already been installed near Chernobyl. The system is intended to significantly slow the rapid movement of infantry units.
Earlier, Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine Alexander Pivnenko said Russian forces could be preparing an offensive operation along the country’s northern borders.
