Germany could become drawn into a possible armed confrontation with Russia, according to Martin Jaeger, head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Phoenix reported.

Jaeger said the confrontation with Russia had entered a new and more dangerous phase, creating a risk that Germany could become involved in a violent conflict.

At the same time, he stressed that the BND has detected no signs that Moscow is preparing an attack. Despite that, Jaeger said NATO cannot afford to lower its level of vigilance.

On October 2, The Atlantic reported that the Baltic states were preparing for a possible war with Russia and considering a scenario in which US military assistance could be delayed.

According to the magazine, existing plans envisage the involvement of American troops stationed in Poland and Germany. At the same time, concerns are growing in the Baltic states that Washington may not provide support if a conflict begins.

Russian authorities have repeatedly pointed in recent years to what they describe as unprecedented NATO activity near Russia’s western borders. The alliance continues to expand related initiatives, describing them as «deterring Russian aggression».
