The US military has urgently withdrawn all of its B-1 strategic bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain, about a week after an alleged terrorist plot near the base was disrupted, The New York Times reported, citing American officials.

According to the newspaper, the redeployment was carried out on an accelerated schedule. Some aircraft and crews reportedly began their return flights to the United States before aerial refueling tankers were fully prepared to support the journey.

One NYT source linked the urgency to new threat warnings that had caused serious concern within the US military command.

The newspaper said 12 American B-1 bombers had been stationed at Fairford. The base had been used by US forces as a staging point for operations connected with strikes on Iran. All of the bombers have now returned to their permanent bases in the United States.

On September 27, British police detained five men near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. They have been charged with preparing a terrorist act and violating explosives legislation.

UK authorities are examining whether the suspects may have been acting on behalf of a foreign state. Possible Iranian involvement in the alleged plot is also being considered.
