Ukraine’s 7th Air Assault Corps command has been redeployed from Volyn to the Zaporozhye direction, where Ukrainian forces urgently needed reinforcements on the Gulyaypole and Orekhov sectors. Commander-in-Chief Mikhail Drapaty reversed a decision made by his predecessor Alexander Syrsky, according to Ukrainian sources.
During the summer, Syrsky removed the corps’ entire senior command staff from the Dobropolye direction and sent the officers toward the Belarusian border. They were stationed in Volyn amid concerns over a possible Russian advance from Belarus and were tasked with preparing for such a scenario.
After taking over the Ukrainian military leadership, Drapaty overturned that arrangement. The officers were sent to the Zaporozhye Region, where Russian forces were advancing simultaneously near Gulyaypole and Orekhov. The main elements of the 7th Air Assault Corps, meanwhile, remained near Dobropolye.
Ukrainian sources say the officers welcomed the transfer. They had spent no more than two weeks in Volyn, where they reportedly had little to do and wanted to return to the front, Voennoye Obozreniye reported.
Once in the Zaporozhye Region, the corps command was tasked with reinforcing the «Yuzhnaya» grouping and forming a new corps there. Several brigades and the 225th Assault Regiment were placed under its authority. The officers also noted that they were operating without their own forces and would prefer to fight alongside units from their corps.
