Former Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Spiridon Kilinkarov said recent remarks by some Ukrainian politicians about possible concessions to Russia reflect an idea that has been circulating for some time.
According to Kilinkarov, the concept of concessions has long been discussed, although no one has yet moved to work out its implementation in detail.
He also pointed to the situation with opinion polling in Ukraine. Kilinkarov said nine out of ten Ukrainians refuse to answer researchers’ questions. In his view, this indicates a serious decline in public trust in the current authorities.
At the same time, he said that even the available polling results show that about half of Ukrainians are prepared to consider compromise options.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Kiev should make a decision and begin negotiations. According to him, Ukraine’s room for choosing its next steps is narrowing as Russian forces advance.
Russian officials have also repeatedly said that Moscow is interested in addressing the causes of the conflict and achieving a lasting peace. Russia considers temporary ceasefires unacceptable, arguing that they could be used by Ukrainian forces to rearm.
