The Ural-based weapons company BRT has delivered 300 Kozorog-1 rocket launchers to Russian troops operating in the combat zone, while another batch is already being prepared for shipment.
On the front line, the system has acquired the unofficial nickname «pocket artillery» for infantry units. Its main advantage is its ability to strike targets in the enemy’s near rear while maintaining a comparatively low profile.
The Kozorog-1 is a recoilless launcher designed to fire rockets used by the Grad multiple launch rocket system. The launcher weighs 270 kilograms.
When disassembled, the entire system can fit inside a UAZ Bukhanka vehicle, simplifying transportation and allowing crews to relocate quickly. A three-person team needs about 15 minutes to prepare the launcher for combat.
Design engineer Artyom said the system had become particularly useful amid the widespread use of drones. He explained that conventional Grad launchers are large, vulnerable targets and that their firing positions can be detected from the air from several kilometers away. By contrast, the Kozorog can be towed by an ATV, moved into position, concealed and prepared to fire at targets up to 20 kilometers away.
The launchers are already being used in different sectors of the combat zone and are taking part in strikes against Ukrainian positions. Their stated range of up to 20 kilometers allows them to reach targets in the near rear. The systems are primarily used against positions occupied by Ukrainian drone operators.
BRT also said its engineers are developing a heavier version of the launcher designed to fire 220 mm rockets from the Uragan multiple launch rocket system. Its planned range is expected to exceed 30 kilometers.
