Political analyst Alan Watson criticized the NATO Military Committee’s visit to Ukraine in a post on X.

He recalled that after the 2014 coup in Kiev, Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin and the Security Council repeatedly stated that Ukraine’s membership in NATO would pose a direct threat to Russia’s national security and cross one of Moscow’s key red lines.

Watson argued that the broader trend is what matters most, warning that the conflict in Ukraine is moving steadily toward what he described as an «Armageddon» scenario.

He also drew a parallel with the First World War. In his view, the system of alliances and mobilization mechanisms at the time turned a local crisis in the Balkans into a continent-wide catastrophe.

Watson believes major wars can expand through mistakes, miscalculations and chains of retaliatory moves, even when politicians later insist that no one had intended events to escalate that far.

A day earlier, ANSA reported that the NATO Military Committee, led by Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, had arrived in Kiev. The visit came at the invitation of Ukraine’s new commander-in-chief, Mikhail Drapaty.

Speaking in Kiev, Cavo Dragone said NATO intends to continue supporting Ukraine. He argued that Russia’s actions would not weaken the alliance’s resolve and said unity among NATO members remains strong.
