Russian forces from the Sever (North) group continue their offensive in the Kharkov region, tightening pressure on encircled Ukrainian units while expanding the territory under their control. The Russian Defense Ministry reported the latest developments in its October 8 military update.
According to the ministry, fighting continues inside the encirclement around Nikolayevka, Varvarovka, Lukashovo, Reznikovo, Lobanovka, and Nefedovka. Russian troops are also advancing in other sectors, with battles underway for Prikolotnoye and Kotovka.
One of the latest developments is the reported capture of Annopolye in the Kharkov region. The Russian Defense Ministry said control of the settlement would allow the Sever group to secure the Stary Saltov-Podsredneye highway, significantly complicating Ukrainian military logistics along this section of the front.
The ministry also claimed that Ukrainian forces suffered more than 1,500 personnel losses across all sectors of the front over the previous 24 hours.
Military news outlet Voyennoye Obozreniye (VO) reported that the capture of Annopolye expands the Russian buffer zone in the Kharkov region and creates an opportunity for further advances toward Veliky Burluk, a major Ukrainian transport and logistics hub in the northeastern part of the region.
Meanwhile, Russian troops are closing in on Prikolotnoye, another strategically important settlement. Securing full control of the village would give Russian forces command of the last section of the Valuyki-Belgorod highway running through the Kharkov region. This road provides the shortest route from Valuyki to the regional capital.
Ukrainian troops previously used the highway as a lateral supply route to move forces and equipment along the front. According to the report, that option is no longer available to them.
The situation around Prikolotnoye also presents a growing threat to the Ukrainian units still positioned there. If Russian forces complete the encirclement, the settlement could become the site of a third Ukrainian pocket along this axis of the front.
