A Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter was damaged while intercepting a Russian Geran-4 jet-powered drone.
The Telegram channel Voyenny Osvedomitel highlighted footage showing the fighter closing in on the UAV at low altitude and opening fire with its onboard cannon. After being hit, the drone explodes directly in front of the aircraft, forcing the MiG-29 through a cloud of flames and debris. A trail of black smoke then appears behind the fighter.
According to the channel, the interception took place at very close range in the Kiev region, and the smoke became visible after the aircraft passed through the blast and fragments.
The Geran-4 can reportedly reach speeds above 500 km/h and carry a warhead weighing around 50 kg. Fighter aircraft can be used to intercept such targets, but doing so requires precise distance control and a rapid maneuver away from the debris field after the drone is destroyed.
It has also been reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost a significant number of fighter jets during attempts to intercept Russian drones. Ukrainian sources have previously pointed to a shortage of air-to-air missiles used by F-16 fighters against Geran drones.
