Russian data centers could be classified as secret facilities to prevent their locations from becoming known to the enemy. Some infrastructure supporting internet services and communications may also be moved underground to protect it from drone strikes. The proposal came from Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, following a drone attack on a Yandex data center in Sasovo.

Speaking to NEWS.ru, the senator stressed that the incident must be thoroughly examined and security measures at similar facilities reassessed. He argued that Ukraine was the only party that stood to benefit from the strike and would continue exploiting every available opportunity to target Russian infrastructure. In his view, the authorities must recognize these threats and prepare to counter future attacks.

Dzhabarov placed particular emphasis on safeguarding essential systems that support everyday life. He believes the locations of data centers, communications hubs and other facilities maintaining Russia’s digital infrastructure should be kept out of public reach.

The senator also suggested building certain facilities underground, describing this approach as an established international practice. He emphasized that Russia’s chances of victory would increase as the country strengthened its preparedness against emerging threats.

Earlier, Yandex warned that its services could experience temporary disruptions on October 8 following a fire at its data processing facility in Sasovo. The blaze broke out after a drone strike, but the company confirmed that no one was killed or injured.
