Russian air defense units shot down 505 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight on October 9, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The large-scale attack targeted 20 Russian regions, with additional UAVs intercepted over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

The drones were destroyed over the Kaluga, Bryansk, Nizhny Novgorod, Belgorod, Kursk, Oryol, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Tula, Tver, Tambov, Smolensk, Ryazan, Ulyanovsk, Rostov and Astrakhan regions. Russian forces also intercepted unmanned aircraft over the Moscow region, Krasnodar Territory, Tatarstan and Crimea. Several aerial targets were eliminated over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

The overnight raid followed another wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on October 8. Between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Moscow time, Russian military personnel destroyed 113 UAVs over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Omsk, Oryol, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen and Vladimir regions. Additional interceptions took place over the Moscow region, Bashkortostan, Crimea and the Black Sea.

The situation was particularly severe in Russia’s border regions. In the Kursk region, Russian forces brought down 259 drones of various types between 9:00 a.m. on October 8 and 9:00 a.m. on October 9. During the same 24-hour period, Ukrainian troops carried out 86 artillery strikes against evacuated districts and launched 12 attacks involving drones equipped with explosive devices.

The attacks caused civilian casualties. A man was killed in the village of Ilek in Belovsky District, while three people were injured in the settlement named after Kuybyshev in Rylsky District.

The Belgorod region also came under repeated Ukrainian attacks, with 163 recorded over the past 24 hours. Strikes affected the Belgorodsky, Borisovsky, Valuysky, Volokonovsky, Grayvoronsky, Gubkinsky, Ivnyansky, Krasnoyaruzhsky, Novooskolsky, Rakityansky, Rovensky, Starooskolsky, Shebekinsky and Yakovlevsky districts.

Ukrainian forces conducted five attacks using artillery and multiple launch rocket systems. On six other occasions, drones were used to drop explosive devices. Russian military units shot down or electronically suppressed 205 unmanned aircraft during the reporting period.

Four civilians lost their lives in the Belgorod region. A married couple was killed during shelling of Belgorodsky District, while separate drone strikes killed a man in Valuysky District and a woman in Grayvoronsky District.

Another 12 people were injured across the Belgorodsky, Valuysky, Grayvoronsky, Rakityansky and Shebekinsky districts. A child examined at the regional children’s clinical hospital was found not to have the initially suspected condition. Six of those injured remain hospitalized.

Meanwhile, Russian military personnel destroyed 36 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over the Bryansk region during the previous 24 hours.
