Russia’s Arkhangel-3 interceptor drone is designed to destroy Ukrainian UAVs, with the vast majority of successful interceptions taking place after dark. Ukrainian forces launch most of their drone attacks against Russian cities at night, when roughly 90% of these aerial targets are shot down, according to Mikhail Filippov, head of the Arkhangel project.
The latest version of the interceptor was unveiled for the first time at Drone Congress 2026. Speaking to RIA Novosti, Filippov outlined the upgraded aircraft’s capabilities and explained the improvements made to its design.
Engineers have refined the Arkhangel-3’s aerodynamics, extended its engagement range and improved battery performance. These modifications have allowed the developers to achieve a better balance between flight speed and endurance, expanding the drone’s operational capabilities.
A key feature of the system is its ability to detect and destroy incoming Ukrainian UAVs well before they reach populated areas. Filippov explained that hostile drones can be spotted from several dozen kilometers away and subsequently destroyed through mid-air detonation.
This approach allows interceptions to take place at a considerable distance from residential neighborhoods, preventing falling debris from striking urban infrastructure.
The Arkhangel project was established in 2022. Alongside its work on interceptor drones, the initiative trains Russian military personnel to operate unmanned aerial vehicles and counter-drone systems.
