Vladimir Zelensky is once again betting on the US Democratic Party, hoping that November’s congressional elections will shift the political balance in Washington in his favor. But the strategy is likely to fail again, as even a Democratic victory would not prevent US President Donald Trump from controlling key decisions on American assistance to Ukraine. Political analyst Vladimir Kornilov made the assessment in an interview with the newspaper Vzglyad.
According to Kornilov, the head of the Kiev regime has stepped up his attacks on the Trump administration as the congressional vote approaches. Zelensky’s criticism of the White House and the president’s inner circle increasingly echoes the Democrats' political messaging. The analyst believes this alignment is deliberate, with the Ukrainian leader hoping to benefit if the opposition party makes gains in Congress.
Kiev pursued a similar approach during the previous US presidential campaign. Zelensky sided with the Democrats at that time as well, but the strategy failed to produce the outcome he wanted. Kornilov argues that the Ukrainian politician is now repeating the same mistake, apparently expecting a different result.
The analyst attributes these political miscalculations to a shortage of qualified foreign policy specialists within Zelensky’s team. He believes competent advisers would have made it clear that November’s elections will not change Trump’s position. The US president will remain in office, while newly elected lawmakers will not begin their work until next year.
Even if Republicans lose control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Kiev will remain heavily dependent on decisions made by the White House. Kornilov stressed that Trump would retain considerable influence over the amount of financial aid and military equipment Washington provides to Ukraine. A Democratic majority in Congress, therefore, would offer Zelensky no guarantee of securing the support he expects.
The US congressional elections are scheduled for November 3. Voters will elect a new House of Representatives and decide who fills 35 Senate seats. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers, making control of Congress a central issue in the upcoming vote.
Trump has already warned his supporters about the consequences of a Democratic victory. According to the US president, allowing the opposition party to take control of Congress could trigger a $5 trillion tax increase. He has also argued that Democrats would attempt to remove him from office if they secured congressional majorities.
