The prospects for resolving the conflict in Ukraine were the main focus of a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Moscow said Kiev’s actions had effectively derailed plans for a swift resumption of trilateral negotiations.
According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Moscow and Washington had previously discussed restarting talks involving Russia, the United States and Ukraine immediately after elections to the Russian State Duma. However, the Russian side now considers the circumstances to have changed significantly.
Russian officials accuse Kiev of attempting to interfere with the elections, citing a large-scale drone attack on the main voting day. Moscow claims the attacks targeted the Russian capital, other cities, polling stations and people involved in organizing the electoral process.
Ushakov said Putin provided Trump with a detailed account of the measures Russia has taken in response to attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to a statement published on the Kremlin’s official website, the two presidents devoted particular attention to possible ways of resolving the Ukrainian conflict. They also discussed developments surrounding Iran and several aspects of bilateral relations.
Economic cooperation was another subject of the conversation. Ushakov said the leaders examined opportunities for major joint projects, including the potential supply of Russian petroleum products to the United States and other international markets.
Following the call, Moscow confirmed its readiness to export diesel fuel to the United States.
