Vladimir Zelensky rejected U. S. President Donald Trump’s demand to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, saying any steps toward de-escalation must be mutual and backed by real guarantees.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine would be prepared to halt attacks on Russian refineries if Russia stopped striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

He also said talks with European leaders on additional military aid packages were continuing. Zelensky identified stronger air defenses and ammunition for combat aircraft as the main priorities.

Earlier, Trump accused Zelensky of failing to pursue an end to the conflict and argued that Ukraine needed a change in leadership. The U.S. president also said strikes on Russian refineries were creating problems with diesel supplies, including for American farmers.

On October 10, Trump again said Ukraine needed a new president. He argued that Zelensky had already had several opportunities to reach a settlement but had failed to use them.
