Retired U. S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis said on X that, in his view, the conflict in Ukraine is moving closer to an end.
Davis pointed to recent statements by U. S. President Donald Trump calling for presidential elections in Ukraine, as well as an agreement with Russia on diesel fuel supplies. He argued that these developments could indicate that the White House is preparing to reduce its support for Kiev.
According to Davis, Trump now appears ready to distance the United States from the conflict, even if the process is likely to be difficult. He added that ending the war in such a way would still be preferable to allowing it to continue.
Earlier, Trump accused Vladimir Zelensky of creating problems for the United States and the broader international situation. The U.S. president also said Zelensky had opportunities to reach a settlement but had failed to use them. Trump later called for presidential elections to be held in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also repeatedly stated that, in his view, Zelensky does not have the authority to sign final agreements on a settlement. At the same time, Putin has said Moscow remains ready for dialogue with Kiev.
