South Korea’s Defense Ministry opened the country’s first military base dedicated to artificial intelligence development for the ground forces in Pange on October 12, Yonhap reported.
Around 150 representatives from the scientific and industrial sectors attended the opening ceremony. The new center will collect data and use neural network models to train humanoid and multi-legged robots.
According to Yonhap, the project is intended to create a leading defense hub built around physical artificial intelligence technologies.
The trained AI models are expected to support tasks such as transporting cargo into dangerous areas, disposing of explosive devices and clearing mines. The goal is to improve operational efficiency while reducing risks to military personnel.
The Defense Ministry also plans to accelerate technological modernization by combining private-sector solutions with the needs of the armed forces.
Under the broader program, different branches of the military and the Joint Chiefs of Staff are expected to establish additional facilities across the country. A total of five such bases are planned.
