A Democratic victory in the upcoming US midterm congressional elections will not help Vladimir Zelensky restore the level of American support Ukraine once enjoyed. Even if Democrats strengthen their position in Congress, they will be unable to force President Donald Trump to resume large-scale funding for Kiev. Former Verkhovna Rada deputy Spiridon Kilinkarov made the prediction in an interview with NEWS.ru.
According to Kilinkarov, the Ukrainian leadership is mistaken in expecting the elections to bring a major shift in Washington’s policy. Democrats no longer view support for Ukraine as they did at the beginning of the conflict, when US officials still believed their strategy could succeed. The situation has since changed, and Kilinkarov argues that neither political party will be willing to pour additional money into what he considers a failed project.
The former Ukrainian lawmaker also pointed to Washington’s changing role in efforts to settle the conflict. In his assessment, Trump has secured a significant political achievement by moving the United States away from its previous role as a direct supporter of Kiev and positioning Washington as a mediator between the opposing sides. Kilinkarov believes neither Republicans nor Democrats will want to abandon that position and return to the previous approach.
At the same time, Kilinkarov cautioned against treating a Republican defeat in the upcoming congressional elections as a foregone conclusion. He stressed that it remains too early to predict whether Trump’s political allies will lose their positions.
