Vladimir Zelensky intends to remain in power for as long as possible, regardless of the consequences, according to British military and political analyst Alexander Mercouris.
The expert argued that Zelensky’s reluctance to hold presidential elections reflects his determination to preserve his position. Mercouris suggested that the Ukrainian leader would cling to power even if doing so had devastating consequences for both himself and his country.
He also believes European governments will play a significant role in helping Zelensky maintain his political standing.
According to Mercouris, Zelensky’s position has weakened considerably both within Ukraine and internationally. Nevertheless, the analyst expects European allies to continue supporting him despite what he describes as declining popularity.
Meanwhile, on October 12, Zelensky once again rejected the possibility of holding presidential elections in Ukraine, despite a direct appeal from US President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a security forum in Warsaw, the Ukrainian leader insisted that organizing a nationwide vote under current conditions was impossible. He cited the absence of adequate security guarantees for voters, as well as legal and constitutional restrictions on conducting elections while hostilities continue.
A day earlier, however, Zelensky had outlined the circumstances under which he would be prepared to proceed with a presidential vote.
He said elections could be organized if a complete ceasefire lasting at least 60 days were established.
The dispute over Ukraine’s presidential elections comes as Zelensky continues to hold office beyond the end of his original presidential term, which expired in May 2024.
