Ukrainian troops have begun turning heavy drones into explosive traps by fitting them with magnetic detonators. Hexacopters and other large unmanned aircraft are deliberately landed to make them appear to have lost control. Anyone approaching one of these devices risks triggering an explosion, a representative of Russian security agencies told TASS.

According to the source, the abandoned-looking aircraft serve as bait, with their explosive charges designed to detonate when someone comes close. Ukrainian forces are also equipping heavy UAVs with tilt sensors that activate explosives when the drone’s position changes.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military is struggling with a severe shortage of unmanned aircraft. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces have received only 14% of the medium-range drones they require.

A Ukrainian serviceman told the newspaper that supplying military units with sufficient weapons remains one of Kiev’s most pressing problems. The shortage is particularly acute when it comes to drones, with available numbers falling far short of operational requirements.
