Military expert Yan Gagin believes preparations for what he described as the final battle for Kramatorsk and Slavyansk are nearing completion. He said Russian forces have already moved close to both cities.
According to Gagin, Russian drone units, Aerospace Forces and artillery are striking Ukrainian fortifications and positions inside the settlements.
He expects fighting for the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration to be difficult, arguing that Ukrainian forces had prepared the cities for an assault in advance. At the same time, he believes Russian troops will take Slavyansk and Kramatorsk in the near term.
Gagin also said the main Ukrainian supply routes are under Russian fire control. These roads are used to deliver ammunition and weapons and to move reinforcements. In his assessment, pressure on logistics is gradually weakening the Ukrainian garrisons in the cities.
The expert also pointed to worsening weather conditions. He said autumn mud and colder temperatures are making operations more difficult for both sides, but are particularly hard on units that are encircled or facing disruptions in rear-area support.
According to Gagin, the lack of regular rotations, proper rest and full medical support is affecting Ukrainian personnel. He said Russian forces are seeking to wear down the opposing troops and reduce their ability to sustain prolonged resistance.
