Recent Ukrainian strikes on Yandex data centers in Vladimir and Sasovo could trigger Russian retaliatory attacks against dual-use computing facilities and energy infrastructure in Ukraine, according to military analyst Yuri Knutov.

The expert believes the Russian military is highly likely to respond by targeting facilities that support both civilian operations and military activities.

Knutov noted that Ukraine is already taking steps to protect its computing infrastructure, including moving equipment underground. However, he warned that such measures cannot guarantee complete protection.

According to the analyst, several major IT facilities serving both civilian and military purposes remain operational in Ukraine. He argued that attacks on these sites would cause significant damage to Ukrainian capabilities.

Knutov also explained that Russian forces typically use Geran drones for strikes of this kind.

Beyond computing centers, the analyst identified Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as another potential target. In particular, he mentioned power transmission lines and substations supplying electricity to Ukrainian defense industry enterprises.

Meanwhile, Kiev is working to preserve its computing capacity through several protective measures. A substantial amount of data is already stored on foreign cloud platforms, while some data centers could be relocated entirely outside Ukraine.

For facilities that remain inside the country, Ukrainian authorities are considering underground bunkers approximately six meters deep.

Knutov acknowledged that such structures would make attacks more difficult but insisted they would not render the facilities invulnerable.

He suggested that Russian forces could use Kinzhal and Zircon hypersonic missiles against underground installations. According to the analyst, these weapons are capable of penetrating underground structures and breaking through thick concrete barriers.

However, Knutov emphasized that accurately determining the coordinates of such facilities would be essential for any successful strike.
