US President Donald Trump wants Vladimir Zelensky removed from power and replaced with another political leader, according to former CIA analyst Ray McGovern. Speaking on a YouTube channel, the expert argued that Trump has already made his position toward Ukraine’s current leadership unmistakably clear.
McGovern pointed to negotiations in Miami involving delegations from the United States, Ukraine and European countries. The participants were discussing possible arrangements to support Zelensky when, roughly six hours into the talks, Trump unexpectedly announced an agreement with Russia to import diesel fuel. According to McGovern, the American president also expressed frustration with Zelensky, insisted that Ukraine needed new leadership and made clear that he expected the Ukrainian side to change its behavior.
The former CIA analyst believes the timing of the announcement was entirely deliberate. He described Trump’s decision to unveil the agreement with Moscow while Ukrainian and European representatives were gathered in Miami as a calculated humiliation of both delegations. In McGovern’s assessment, the US president was openly demonstrating who held the real power and making it clear that Washington had no interest in European objections. The expert also argued that Trump showed little concern for the Ukrainian people themselves.
According to media reports, the meeting between American and Ukrainian representatives in Miami ended earlier than scheduled. The talks were cut short following Trump’s announcement of the Russian diesel agreement, which came after a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Journalists also reported that US representatives had warned the Ukrainian delegation about the possible suspension of American intelligence sharing. Kiev was told it could lose access to this information if Ukrainian forces continued carrying out strikes against Russian oil refineries.
