Russia’s upcoming Geran-6 jet-powered drones could deliver more destructive strikes than Iskander missiles, according to military expert Yury Knutov. Speaking to Gazeta.Ru, he outlined the capabilities of the new weapon, which could enter combat use in 2027.
A major improvement is the significantly heavier warhead. While other drones in the Geran family typically carry around 90 kilograms of explosives, the Geran-6 could accommodate a payload weighing up to 600 kilograms. Knutov believes this firepower, combined with the drone’s extended range, would make it capable of striking targets even in western Ukraine. He argued that the new aircraft could entirely replace cruise missiles and take over some of the missions currently performed by Iskander tactical missile systems. In his assessment, the Geran-6 would surpass those missiles in destructive power. He also highlighted the cost of the drones as another compelling reason for their use.
The discussion followed a report published the previous day by the Russian Spring War Correspondents Telegram channel. According to its authors, Russia may soon begin deploying Geran-6 drones equipped with jet engines and designed to attack targets from considerable altitude along a ballistic trajectory. Their reported operational range would allow them to reach locations throughout Ukraine.
