The Russian Defense Ministry said the nuclear-powered submarine Novosibirsk carried out missile launches during exercises in the Pacific Ocean, striking targets at distances of up to 1,200 kilometers.
The submarine used Oniks and Kalibr missiles during the drills. An Oniks missile hit a naval target simulating an enemy ship at a range of more than 170 kilometers, while a Kalibr missile struck a target at the Kura test range in Kamchatka after traveling more than 1,200 kilometers.
The Defense Ministry said Pacific Fleet ships and support vessels secured the firing area and closed it to civilian shipping and aviation during the exercise.
Novosibirsk is the first serial-produced nuclear-powered submarine of Project 885M Yasen-M. It was laid down on July 26, 2013, and launched on December 25, 2019.
The main strike weapons of Project 885 and 885M submarines are Kalibr and Oniks cruise missiles. Novosibirsk arrived with the Pacific Fleet together with the Project 955A Borei-A strategic nuclear-powered missile submarine Knyaz Oleg.
Novosibirsk is currently part of the Pacific Fleet’s permanent readiness forces. It serves with the 10th Submarine Division and is based in Vilyuchinsk.
