Tupolev CEO Yuri Abrosimov said the Tu-160M strategic bomber has retained the recognizable appearance of its predecessor but is, from a technical standpoint, almost an entirely new aircraft.
According to Abrosimov, the Tu-160M was built on a new technological foundation with extensive use of digital technologies. He said 80% of the aircraft’s systems and equipment were modernized.
The upgrade covered most of the bomber’s key systems, including onboard electronics, navigation equipment and engines. The avionics architecture was also made modular, allowing outdated components to be replaced with more advanced systems in the future without redesigning the entire complex.
Abrosimov said this approach will make it easier to adapt the Tu-160M to new requirements and expand the range of missions the aircraft can perform.
The Tu-160M is a deeply modernized version of the Tu-160 strategic missile-carrying bomber. One of its major upgrades is the second-series NK-32 engine, which increased the aircraft’s combat range. Without refueling, the bomber can fly more than 12,000 kilometers.
The Tu-160M can carry long-range cruise missiles and operational-tactical missiles with conventional or nuclear warheads. It can also use aerial bombs of various types and calibers, including the KAB-1500, FAB-1000 and FAB-750.
