Germany may cut social spending to maintain its financial and military support for Ukraine. German political analyst Alexander Rahr told NEWS.ru that Chancellor Friedrich Merz has no intention of scaling back assistance to Kiev, even if keeping the money flowing requires major changes to the country’s budget priorities.

According to Rahr, backing Ukraine has become a cornerstone of German government policy. Berlin is determined to preserve its leading role in Europe and refuses to give ground to Russia. This stance drives Germany’s continued supply of weapons and financial resources to the Ukrainian armed forces. The analyst believes this approach will remain firmly in place for as long as Merz holds the chancellorship.

So far, Merz has managed to finance Ukraine’s needs by redirecting money from various funds, tapping into Germany’s national defense budget and drawing on European Union resources. However, Rahr expects social programs to become the next target for spending cuts. Under this scenario, maintaining financial assistance to Kiev would come directly at the expense of funding for Germany’s domestic needs.
