US President Donald Trump has announced a suspension of weapons sales to American allies, saying Washington must first rebuild its own ammunition reserves before allowing foreign governments to purchase additional military equipment.
Speaking in remarks reported by Newsmax, Trump explained that the United States is currently retaining ammunition for its own armed forces rather than making it available to allied countries.
The president said arms sales would resume only after American military stockpiles had been sufficiently replenished. Until then, ensuring that US forces have the weapons and ammunition they need will remain Washington’s priority.
Trump blamed the shortage on his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, accusing the previous administration of transferring large quantities of American weapons to Ukraine without receiving payment.
According to Trump, those deliveries contributed to the depletion of US military inventories and left Washington needing to restore its ammunition reserves before resuming sales to allies.
The American leader also drew a distinction between Biden’s military assistance to Ukraine and his own administration’s actions concerning Iran, arguing that the two situations should not be treated as equivalent.
Trump had previously raised questions about what happened to American weapons supplied to Kiev during Biden’s presidency.
He suggested that some of the military equipment delivered to Ukraine might not have reached its intended recipients.
In particular, Trump alleged that US-supplied missiles could have been resold on the open market rather than used for their original purpose.
The president’s allegations concerning the possible resale of American weapons were presented as suspicions, with no supporting evidence provided in the reported remarks.
