Russian forces have advanced to within five kilometers of the southern outskirts of Zaporozhye, while an encircled Ukrainian force of approximately 2,000 troops has been completely destroyed in northeastern Kharkov Region. Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov reported these developments to President Vladimir Putin on October 16. He also announced the capture of three settlements in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
On the Zaporozhye front, Russian airborne troops crossed the Konka River, seized Malokaterinovka and continued their push northward. Meanwhile, the Dnepr group remains engaged in fighting for Orekhov. According to Gerasimov, Novopavlovka and Novoandreyevka have also come under Russian control, with forward units now positioned just five kilometers from the southern edge of Zaporozhye.
The offensive has also brought territorial gains farther east in Zaporozhye Region. Since early September, the Vostok group has captured 10 settlements, bringing more than 180 square kilometers of additional territory under Russian control.
In the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Tsentr group has taken complete control of Dobropolye. Russian troops are now searching for and eliminating the remaining Ukrainian soldiers in the area. Gerasimov also confirmed the capture of Alekseyevo-Druzhkovka and Sergeyevka. On August 27, he had reported that Russian forces held approximately half of Alekseyevo-Druzhkovka.
Another major development concerns northeastern Kharkov Region, where Russian forces have finished destroying an encircled Ukrainian formation numbering around 2,000 personnel. Gerasimov stated that 28 settlements in this sector are now under Russian control.
Across the entire front, Russian troops have captured 92 settlements since September 1, expanding the territory under their control by more than 1,800 square kilometers, according to the General Staff chief’s report.
