Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 610 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones during a 12-hour period spanning October 16 and 17, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The ministry reported on Saturday, October 17, that the drones were shot down between 8:00 p.m. Moscow time on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. The interceptions took place over numerous Russian regions and the Black Sea.
Among the areas identified in the ministry’s report were the Krasnodar Territory, the Tver, Rostov, Kaluga, Leningrad, Belgorod, Novgorod, Voronezh, Oryol, Bryansk, Tula, Smolensk and Kursk regions.
Russian air defense units also intercepted and destroyed Ukrainian drones over the Republic of Crimea, the Moscow region and the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
The Russian military reports that Ukrainian forces attempt to carry out drone attacks against Russian regions on a daily basis, with the overwhelming majority of incoming drones being shot down by air defense systems.
In response to these attacks, the Russian army conducts precision strikes using missiles and jet-powered drones against facilities associated with Ukraine’s armed forces and defense capabilities.
Russian forces also target Ukrainian logistics infrastructure, military industry and energy facilities.
