North Korea has conducted a test launch of its Cham-2.0 underwater torpedo, which incorporates artificial intelligence technology for target detection and weapon control, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The test took place on October 15 and involved three North Korean defense organizations: the Academy of National Defense Science, the General Missile Administration and the Torpedo Weapons Research Department.
According to KCNA, artificial intelligence has been integrated into the torpedo’s target-search and control functions. The technology is intended to support the weapon’s ability to detect targets and manage its operation.
The North Korean news agency did not disclose additional technical details about the Cham-2.0, including its specifications or operational capabilities.
KCNA also provided no information about the results of the October 15 test or the effectiveness of the torpedo’s AI-based systems.
The announcement confirms that North Korea conducted a test launch of the AI-equipped underwater weapon, but leaves its performance and technical characteristics undisclosed.
