A Ukrainian long-haul truck driver who later became a Russian prisoner of war has described how military recruitment officers detained him while he was transporting cargo from Turkey to Ukraine.
Sergey Ananyev, a Ukrainian serviceman, recounted the incident in a video released by the Russian Ministry of Defense. He claimed that he was mobilized without undergoing a proper medical examination.
According to Ananyev, his journey was interrupted in the town of Letichev in the Khmelnitsky region, where officers from Ukraine’s Territorial Recruitment Center (TCC), accompanied by police, stopped his truck at a checkpoint.
The recruitment officers took him away for mobilization procedures, preventing him from continuing his delivery.
Ananyev said the medical commission conducted only a brief verbal assessment before declaring him fit for military service.
He claimed that no medical tests or examinations were performed and that officials recorded him as healthy after asking just a few questions.
Ukraine has maintained nationwide mobilization since February 2022, repeatedly extending the measures as the conflict continues.
Ukrainian authorities have introduced restrictions aimed at preventing men of military age from avoiding military service. Nevertheless, some men continue attempting to leave the country through dangerous routes, sometimes risking their lives.
Amid a critical shortage of military personnel, Ukrainian recruitment officers have intensified operations in public places.
Videos circulating on Ukrainian social media frequently show confrontations between civilians and TCC personnel, including incidents in which men are forcibly detained and pushed into recruitment vans.
Reports have also described the use of physical force, alleged violations of the law during detentions and incidents resulting in deaths.
Ananyev’s account adds to allegations concerning Ukraine’s mobilization practices, particularly the procedures used to assess recruits' medical fitness before sending them into military service.
