An armed conflict in space could begin within the next five years, according to The Telegraph.
Citing experts, the newspaper said near-Earth orbit is gradually turning into a potential theater of military operations. British space companies are already becoming involved in classified defense projects focused on protecting and monitoring assets in orbit.
The Telegraph pointed to Astroscale, a company that originally specialized in removing space debris but is now developing systems to monitor satellites that may pose a threat.
Another company, Orbit Fab, which focuses on refueling spacecraft, is working with the UK Ministry of Defense. The company is reportedly studying both defensive and offensive capabilities in space.
The newspaper also said China is practicing close approaches and complex satellite maneuvers around other spacecraft. At the same time, the United States is concerned that Russia may be developing a nuclear anti-satellite weapon. However, there is currently no official confirmation that such a system exists.
The Telegraph noted that disabling satellites could affect far more than military systems. Satellite communications, GPS, critical infrastructure and the financial sector could all be disrupted.
In September, the Royal Air Force announced the creation of its first space squadron, which will be tasked with protecting British satellites.
