Russia’s Tu-160 strategic missile-carrying bomber remains one of the most powerful aircraft in its class, combining exceptional flight performance with an extensive missile arsenal. The aircraft holds 46 officially recognized world records, including achievements in flight range and endurance, according to the US-based Military Watch Magazine (MWM).

The publication ranks the upgraded Tu-160M alongside the American B-2 as one of the world’s two most capable strategic bombers. However, MWM argues that the Russian aircraft offers superior flight characteristics in several areas and can deploy a significantly wider variety of missile weapons than its US counterpart.

One of the Tu-160M’s defining features is its variable-sweep wing, a design inherited from the original bomber. This configuration allows the aircraft to reach speeds exceeding Mach 2, making it an exceptionally fast platform in the strategic bomber category.

While the Tu-160M retains its predecessor’s distinctive airframe design, the most extensive changes have taken place beneath its exterior.

Approximately 80% of the bomber’s onboard systems and equipment have been upgraded. Russian engineers have modernized its avionics, navigation equipment, flight control systems, weapons management technology and engines.

These improvements are intended to extend the aircraft’s operational lifespan while ensuring compatibility with modern precision weapons and advanced navigation technologies.

The Tu-160M also retains substantial long-range strike capabilities. Its armament includes up to 12 Kh-55 or Kh-101/102 cruise missiles, housed in two internal rotary launchers.

The combination of supersonic performance, extensive modernization and a diverse missile arsenal underpins the Tu-160M’s position among the world’s leading strategic bombers, according to Military Watch Magazine.
