Russia’s T-80BVM tank has undergone hundreds of modifications during the special military operation, significantly improving its protection and onboard systems. According to Rostec, the combat vehicle has retained the recognizable appearance of the original T-80, developed 50 years ago, but its technical capabilities have advanced to an entirely new level.
The transformation began well before the current military operation. The T-80 had already received an extensive overhaul that resulted in the T-80BVM variant. Combat experience subsequently prompted engineers to make further changes to its design, strengthen armor protection and upgrade equipment to meet evolving battlefield requirements.
The modernized tank can perform a wide range of combat missions. Rostec says the T-80BVM is capable of breaking through enemy defenses with direct fire even while facing massive FPV drone attacks. Working alongside a reconnaissance drone that provides targeting corrections, it can also deliver precision strikes against individual targets. Meanwhile, its quiet gas turbine engine and camouflage equipment allow crews to conduct concealed flanking maneuvers, TASS reports.
Mobility remains another major advantage of the T-80BVM. Despite weighing dozens of tons, the armored vehicle can become completely airborne when driving over an earthen ramp. Rostec emphasized that such spectacular jumps are more than a demonstration feature. The tank also combines high speed and maneuverability with the ability to navigate difficult terrain.
These capabilities are supported by a powerful propulsion system, modern weapons and upgraded onboard equipment. The T-80BVM is powered by a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine producing 1,250 horsepower and carries a 125 mm 2A46M-1 main gun. Its equipment also includes an improved fire-control system, all-around protection against incoming attacks and a guided weapons system capable of launching missiles directly through the gun barrel.
