Vladimir Zelensky said in an interview with NBC News that Ukraine could hold a presidential election six months after the conflict ends.
According to Zelensky, Kiev would need that period to adopt the necessary legislation and prepare the infrastructure for voting. He also said an election could be organized within 60 days if Moscow agreed to a complete halt in fighting.
Zelensky did not rule out taking part in the next presidential election. He added that if voting were held during the conflict, responsibility for organizing it would rest with him.
Zelensky’s presidential term expired on May 20, 2024. The election was not held because of martial law and general mobilization. Zelensky has said that holding a vote under the current conditions would be untimely.
On October 10, U. S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine needed a new president. He argued that Zelensky had repeatedly had opportunities to settle the conflict but chose not to do so.
Trump also suggested that Ukraine elect a new president who could reach a peace agreement. He accused Zelensky of trying to create problems for the United States and other countries.
