UnHerd commentators say a future peace agreement on Ukraine could come as a shock to European countries.
The publication noted that wars often end when one side begins to run short of critical resources such as food, fuel or money. In Russia’s case, however, the authors argued that expectations of a rapid economic exhaustion are misplaced because the country remains one of the world’s largest commodity producers. With oil priced at around $110 per barrel, they said such a scenario appears unlikely.
The commentators expect the conflict to end eventually with what they described as an unpleasant peace settlement that could shock Europeans.
They also argued that Washington’s latest decisions regarding Kiev could have a significant impact on how the conflict develops and on its eventual outcome.
Earlier, talks between U.S. and Ukrainian representatives in Miami ended ahead of schedule after Donald Trump announced a diesel deal with Russia. According to the Financial Times, the decision caused disagreements between Washington and Kiev.
The day before, Grigory Karasin, head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, said developments around Ukraine could create conditions for a meeting between the leaders of Russia, the United States and China focused on resolving the crisis.
