Drone attacks have made traditional trenches virtually useless for protecting troops on the battlefield in Ukraine. According to The New York Times, positions once considered essential for defense have become easy targets from the air, effectively bringing the era of trench warfare to an end.
The growing threat from unmanned aircraft has forced soldiers to change how they operate near the front line. Troops now attempt to reach their positions without being detected, while armored vehicles are used far more cautiously to avoid becoming targets for drone strikes.
These changes have also transformed how military personnel seek protection. Rather than relying on trenches, soldiers now take shelter in abandoned buildings and underground bunkers. As the newspaper points out, conventional defensive positions can no longer provide adequate protection against attacks by drones.
