Russia’s latest Tsitadel air defense system has achieved a 99% target destruction effectiveness rate in combat, according to Rostec. Equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning technology, the system is already being deployed to protect critical facilities against aerial threats.
Tsitadel can intercept a wide range of targets, from small FPV drones and heavy fixed-wing UAVs to cruise missiles. Its AI-based fire control system continuously improves its accuracy by analyzing the results of previous engagements and adjusting its firing calculations.
Rostec explained that the system can identify an incoming target and calculate the required firing trajectory within seconds. If the first round misses, the AI examines what went wrong and immediately adjusts the next shot. This process eliminates the need for sustained bursts of fire and significantly reduces ammunition consumption.
The system also uses shells fitted with programmable fuzes that trigger an explosion at a precisely calculated point. The resulting cloud of fragments destroys the targeted drone. Military personnel operating Tsitadel confirm that eliminating a single target typically requires no more than four rounds.
Beyond operating independently, Tsitadel can be integrated into a layered air defense network. By taking responsibility for drone interceptions, the system reduces the burden on heavier surface-to-air missile systems, allowing them to concentrate on higher-priority aerial threats.
