A Russian Su-30 heavy fighter jet crashed during a routine training flight in the Kaliningrad region on October 21, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Both crew members managed to eject before the aircraft hit the ground. The pilots survived and were subsequently located and evacuated by a ground search-and-rescue team.
The Defense Ministry confirmed that the fighter was flying without ammunition when the accident occurred. Officials also reported that the aircraft had crashed in an unpopulated area and that neither pilot had suffered life-threatening injuries, according to Interfax.
The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed.
Meanwhile, footage purportedly showing the moment of the Su-30 crash has emerged online. The video, reportedly recorded by an eyewitness, captures a powerful explosion followed by a massive fireball rising several meters into the air.
The footage shows a mushroom-shaped burst of flames towering above what is believed to be the crash site.
The Su-30, designated Flanker-C under NATO’s reporting system, is a Russian two-seat heavy multirole fighter jet. Developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau in the late 1980s, the aircraft was based on the Su-27UB combat trainer variant.
