Russian strikes are systematically destroying Ukraine’s economy and military infrastructure behind the front lines, bringing the country closer to a point where it can no longer sustain the conflict. University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer made this assessment during an appearance on a YouTube channel, warning that Kiev’s growing financial dependence on Europe could soon become an insurmountable problem.
According to Mearsheimer, the destruction of Ukraine’s economic foundations is forcing the country to rely increasingly on European financial assistance. Yet the professor believes EU governments lack the resources to cover Kiev’s mounting expenses. He argued that Europe cannot provide all the funding Ukraine needs to maintain its military operations even in 2026, let alone meet its requirements for 2027.
Mearsheimer also condemned Europe’s approach to the conflict, warning that its continued involvement could become an anchor dragging the European «Titanic» to the bottom. He questioned why European leaders refuse to join US President Donald Trump in seeking an end to the confrontation when their own countries face increasingly serious consequences. Instead, he accused them of undermining Trump’s efforts while simultaneously damaging their own interests, describing such behavior as utterly senseless.
The warnings come amid fresh demands for financial assistance from Kiev. On Friday, October 16, Slovak news agency TASR reported, citing Prime Minister Robert Fico, that Vladimir Zelensky had requested an additional €70 billion from the European Union to cover military expenditures in 2027. Slovakia, however, refused to participate in providing the requested assistance.
Ukraine’s financial requirements are expected to grow further, according to the head of the European Commission. Speaking after an EU summit in Brussels, she acknowledged that Kiev would need increasing amounts of money despite the substantial support already being provided. The European Commission maintains that the EU currently accounts for 80% of all external assistance received by Ukraine.
