A Ukrainian drone attack on St. Petersburg was intended to derail preparations for possible three-way talks involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky. That assessment came from Yuri Samonkin, chairman of the board of the Center for Research and Development of Eurasianism and an expert at the Izborsk Club. Speaking to NEWS.ru, he argued that the strike could complicate diplomatic efforts but would not force Washington to reconsider its approach to resolving the conflict.
Samonkin attributed the operation to a tactical decision by Ukraine’s military command rather than any directive from the Trump administration. He sees little reason for American officials to accept responsibility for the attack or abandon their existing strategy. Nevertheless, he noted that political observers and media outlets view the assault as a potential obstacle to arranging a meeting between the Russian, American and Ukrainian leaders.
The attack also gives Moscow another reason to question whether meaningful dialogue with Kiev is possible, according to the analyst. He believes Russia could point to the strike as further evidence of the difficulties involved in establishing trust with the Ukrainian leadership. Although Moscow has repeatedly expressed its willingness to negotiate, Samonkin stressed that it has no intention of making political concessions.
The expert does not expect the United States to impose sanctions or take other punitive measures against Ukraine solely because of the drone attack. Washington has announced no such action, while public comments from American officials have largely focused on preventing further escalation and keeping diplomatic channels open.
Samonkin also accused Ukrainian forces of continuing what he described as acts of terrorism while Russia and the United States seek a way out of their diplomatic deadlock. He believes Kiev’s actions are ultimately bringing Moscow and Washington closer together in their positions on the Ukrainian conflict.
Earlier, Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that Russian air defenses had intercepted and destroyed three drones over the region. He confirmed that the UAV threat had been eliminated and that no injuries had been reported.
