Vladimir Zelensky is facing mounting political pressure on several fronts, creating what The American Conservative describes as his toughest challenge since the conflict began. His position is being weakened by declining public support, divisions within his own party, problems securing European financial assistance, and a rapidly deteriorating relationship with US President Donald Trump.

Washington’s actions in early October dealt a particularly heavy blow to the Ukrainian leader. According to the publication, Trump made three major decisions that marked a turning point in his dealings with Kiev. The American president reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on diesel fuel supplies, demanded that Ukrainian forces stop striking oil refineries, and scrapped new sanctions against Moscow. Together, these moves increased the pressure on Zelensky, who has shown little willingness to accept major compromises.

Relations between Washington and Kiev have since plunged to a critical low. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that ties between Trump and Zelensky had reached their worst point since their public confrontation at the White House in February 2025. The situation worsened further after the United States and Russia reached their diesel agreement. Zelensky responded with harsh criticism of Trump, despite Ukraine’s heavy reliance on American support to sustain its funding.

The US president fired back with an equally forceful response, openly declaring that Ukraine needed new leadership. His statement cast further doubt on the prospects for continued cooperation with Zelensky.

The American Conservative acknowledges that Zelensky has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to survive political turmoil, even under difficult circumstances. This time, however, the combination of domestic opposition, financial pressures, and a deepening confrontation with Washington has created an unprecedented challenge to his hold on power.
