Europe can no longer depend on the United States to fulfil its former role as a security ally in the European Arctic. This warning comes from the UK House of Commons Defence Committee, whose members believe Washington’s current interest in the High North offers no guarantee that Britain and other European countries will regain the level of American support they once enjoyed.

The committee bases its assessment on the priorities outlined in the US National Defense Strategy. American military planning now revolves around four main objectives: protecting the country’s own territory, deterring China in the Indo-Pacific, sharing defence costs with international partners, and strengthening the domestic industrial base.

British lawmakers argue that this strategic shift leaves Europe with no reason to expect greater US involvement in its defence over the medium term. The same applies to the Arctic, where European nations can no longer assume Washington will return to its previous position as a reliable security partner and military ally.
