Donald Trump wants to bring the Ukraine conflict to an end partly to regain leverage over the European Union and force European governments to take Washington’s position seriously. Political analyst and US affairs expert Gevorg Mirzayan shared this assessment with NEWS.ru, arguing that the American president is genuinely determined to secure a settlement.

According to Mirzayan, both Europe and Ukraine have stopped following Trump’s lead, undermining America’s standing as a dominant global power. Their refusal to comply also damages the US president’s personal reputation. The analyst believes Trump has no intention of accepting this loss of authority and wants Brussels and Kiev to change their approach.

Beyond the political struggle, Trump has strong economic reasons to pursue closer relations with Moscow. Mirzayan believes the White House is particularly interested in reviving cooperation with Russia in the energy sector. Domestic fuel prices play a major role in American politics, making the cost of gasoline and diesel an important consideration for the president. In the expert’s assessment, keeping those prices at reasonable levels requires Washington to coordinate its policies with Russia.

The issue of restoring bilateral relations also came up during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s talks with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in St. Petersburg. Putin expressed Moscow’s readiness to rebuild ties with Washington and continue working together. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov subsequently confirmed that the two countries intended to maintain cooperation through their respective government agencies.
