The reported landing of Russian troops in Kherson may have been a reconnaissance mission aimed at identifying suitable locations for future deployments of special operations forces. Retired colonel and military analyst Anatoly Matviychuk shared this assessment with Lenta.ru, adding that he believes the city is preparing to return to Russia, which he described as its historical homeland.
The expert’s comments followed reports that Russian soldiers had crossed the Dnepr River and entered the urban area of Kherson. Taking advantage of thick fog and adverse weather, the troops reportedly made their way to the right bank, where they reached nearby buildings before slipping away from the landing site.
Ukrainian news outlet Strana.ua provided further details of the operation. According to the publication, a Russian sabotage group successfully crossed the river and entered the Ostrov neighborhood, also known as Korabel. The district is located on the right bank of Kherson.
The operation was also reported by the Telegram channel Forpost 34, which is affiliated with the Ukrainian Armed Forces' 34th Separate Marine Brigade. The channel identified the personnel involved in the crossing as members of Russia’s 126th Coastal Defense Brigade.
