US defense giant Lockheed Martin has presented the Pentagon with a proposal for a modified F-16 fighter jet designed specifically to meet the needs of Ukraine’s air force. The concept involves upgrading the aircraft to better suit the conditions in which Ukrainian pilots operate. The Defence Blog reported the initiative, citing sources within the company.
The proposed changes include extending the fighter’s flight range and equipping it with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. The upgraded system would improve the aircraft’s ability to detect low-altitude threats, particularly drones and cruise missiles. Lockheed Martin is also exploring ways to expand the F-16’s compatibility with European-made weapons, including guided bombs and cruise missiles.
The project remains under consideration, with no formal negotiations on developing the new variant underway. However, Kiev has already expressed interest in acquiring an affordable, versatile fighter that Ukrainian pilots are familiar with operating.
The potential upgrade comes amid continued discussions between Ukraine and Lockheed Martin. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevgeny Khmara and Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Mikhail Drapaty recently met with a company delegation led by Orlando Sanchez Jr., president of one of the corporation’s key divisions. Their talks focused on expanding cooperation and future arms deliveries, with particular attention given to supporting Ukraine’s existing F-16 fleet and securing PAC-3 interceptor missiles.
