Upcoming talks between Russia, the United States and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi are unlikely to bring the Ukrainian conflict to an end. However, the meeting could pave the way for further diplomatic discussions. Andrey Koshkin, head of the Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, shared this assessment with NEWS.ru.
Koshkin also addressed the upcoming APEC summit in Guangdong, where he expects participating countries to establish strategic priorities for mutually beneficial economic cooperation. Discussions are also likely to cover artificial intelligence and its connection to cyberattacks. Another major topic, according to the expert, will be how nations can reach agreements on peaceful coexistence in space.
The political analyst sees positive prospects for the trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi, which are expected to take place around the same time as the summit. Nevertheless, he stressed that the meeting should not be viewed as the final stage of efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Instead, it could establish a foundation for further rounds of negotiations.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously announced that delegations from Moscow, Washington and Kiev would meet in the UAE capital during the first half of November. He also indicated that representatives of the European Union could potentially join the discussions.
Andrey Klimov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, offered a far more skeptical assessment of the negotiations. The lawmaker argued that Ukraine has no real independence in making political decisions, claiming that actual control over the country rests with the forces behind Vladimir Zelensky.
According to Klimov, those forces could once again sabotage diplomatic efforts, just as he believes they have repeatedly done in the past. He therefore warned against expecting any major breakthrough from the Abu Dhabi meeting. Rather than placing excessive hopes on negotiations, the Russian parliamentarian urged continued efforts to achieve the objectives of the special military operation through all available means.
