US President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of imposing 200% tariffs on imports from Russia and Ukraine in response to the failure of Moscow and Kiev to reach a peace agreement.

However, the American leader acknowledged that such a move would probably have little economic impact because the United States purchases relatively few goods from either country.

Speaking to reporters, Trump pointed to tariffs as a foreign policy instrument that he believes has already helped Washington resolve eight armed conflicts.

He suggested that the same approach could be applied immediately to Russia and Ukraine in an attempt to push both sides toward a settlement.

Trump admitted that he had not previously considered imposing tariffs of this magnitude on the two countries. Nevertheless, he argued that trade restrictions could serve as a means of pressure, even while questioning their practical effectiveness in this particular case.

The president explained that the limited volume of American imports from Russia and Ukraine would significantly reduce the potential consequences of a 200% tariff.

Trump’s remarks also reflect his longstanding enthusiasm for trade duties as an instrument of US economic policy.

In previous public appearances, he has repeatedly described tariffs as one of his favorite words, emphasizing the importance he places on using import duties to advance American interests.
